Nine

Michael was startled by his doorbell, and he was surprised to find Sam at his doorstep so early in the morning.

“Is Lisa here?” she asked.

“She’s asleep,” Michael answered.

“You ready?” she asked.

“Ready?”

“You said we’d resume training today if I’m not mistaken.”

“Since when do you come get me for training?” Michael asked.

“Since I’m ready now,” Sam said. “What are we doing today?”

“We’ll start with a run.”

“Fine. Let’s go.”

Michael changed and they drove to Blackwood Forest in silence. He got out of the car and opened Sam’s door. “Keep up,” Michael took off running full speed. He wanted Sam to pursue and catch him. He wanted her to hunt. She was already too far behind. She needed to work on her reflexes.

He darted through the trees as she gained speed. That was better, but not good enough. He led her to the center of the forest where the trees were dense. He ran back toward Sam and stopped directly in front of her.

She ran into him with a thud and flew backward. “Damnit,” she shouted.

Michael stood still, ignoring her agony. “Were you running at full speed?” he asked.

“No.”

“Why not?” he asked.

“I was trying not to run into a tree.”

“You were afraid.”

“I was being careful.”

“You were afraid.”

“Fine. Whatever.”

“You manifested exactly what you were afraid of. Do you see that?”

“Yes.”

“You can see very well and your brain works. If something is in your path you go around or knock it down. Do you understand me?”

“I understand.”

“There’s nothing I can do that you can’t. When in pursuit always keep your eyes, your ears, and your nose on your prey. Study them, and anticipate their next move. Everyone has patterns.” Michael took off running, and Sam took off behind him.

He zigged and zagged through the trees.

Sam stopped following him and ran in a straight line. She was able to catch him and stop him in his path. She was paying attention, and Michael was proud when she tackled him to the ground.

“Good job,” he said. He flipped over and pinned her to the ground.

She kicked him between his legs and aimed for his nose. He caught her fist and pushed back. She punched him in the stomach, then a blow to his jaw. She pushed him off of her and pinned him to the ground by his neck.

Michael bent his knees and jumped to his feet. Sam fell backward and quickly shot back up.

“Is that all you got?” he asked.

“No.” Sam stepped back and then ran toward him.

He knew her patterns by now. He braced himself and prepared to push her to the ground, but she didn’t swing at him. Instead, she ducked as he swung and missed.

While Michael tried to regain his balance, she struck. She punched him in the side and stayed low, landing blow after blow. Michael tried to grab her neck but she ducked lower and moved to his side.

She stood upright and punched him in the face.

“That’s enough,” Michael grabbed her hand.

Sam tried to break free. She was growling like a madwoman.

“You feel better?” Michael asked.
