We're halfway through our second bottle of wine; Harriet is quite tipsy. I like tipsy Harriet. The hours are speeding by, a familiar occurrence when I'm in her company, but it's been filled with memories of Dan and their life growing up. Evidently, she was and still is, besotted with her twin. And I can't blame her. Twins are not exactly rare, but they don't appear in every other household either. We've all heard of many strange telepathic communication skills, the knowledge that one of them is in trouble when they're on the other side of the world. I buy into all of that; I think it must be true because we can't prove otherwise. The bond between them is strong, unbreakable, and also a little bit impossible to fully comprehend for all of us single babies.

From a medical standpoint, I've always been fascinated with twins, especially monozygotic twins. Despite the commonalities between them, their health might be vastly different, the individuals often dying of different illnesses. And curiously, they are also thirteen times more likely to have a congenital heart disease than single births, which is naturally very interesting for a heart doctor like me, and also because I've met Harriet - a twin with a heart problem.

Twins are pretty cool, and I would've loved to have met Daniel. To see how he and Harriet are similar. What characteristics they share. What differences are evident.

But I also feel like I'm competing with him, which is madness.

"So who were these friends you ditched me for a few weeks ago? The ones that were coming into Waterloo?"

"Oh, Mason and Grace," Harriet replies with a raised brow. I'm not sure I could keep the chiding hurt out of my voice just then. "Mason was Dan's best friend, Grace was mine. And then Anna kind of joined our gang in sixth form."

"Do you see them a lot?"

"Not really - twice, three times a year probably. They've both moved away from the area, so it's why I couldn't shorten our plans and hook up with you." Another raised brow is aimed my way. I do love it when she gives me shit. "It was really great to see their faces again. Grace could be Naomi Campbell's daughter, or niece or something, and Mason is always up to mischief. It was a fun time growing up with them."

Sounds ominous. "What did you get up to the other night?" I query, slightly worried. Do I need to have a conversation about exclusivity? I decide it's not required, it's already implied.

"This and that. Time wasting, eating, dancing, drinking. Mason tried to pull an off-duty policewoman, but she was more interested in Grace. It was sooo funny!”

She smiles, remembering the incident. "Do you have lots of school friends you keep in touch with?"

"Mainly Dylan. My friends are mostly from my uni days - it's where I met Liam - and hospital training."

As we chat some more about my medical training, childhood stories involving Dylan, and university shenanigans with Liam, we clear up, stacking plates in the dishwasher and wiping down surfaces.
