Other ideas

Other important OT ideas are drawn on and developed in the light of the coming of Messiah Jesus. These include the description of believers, Gentile and Jew, as ‘holy ones’ or ‘saints’ (, Phil. 1:1; 4:21). The language of the Jewish sacrificial system mentioned above in terms of 4:18 also features in 2:17 ( ). Paul draws on priestly language () in terms of the service of the Philippians (2:17,30) and Epaphroditus (2:25).

In Philippians 3:2–6 Paul applies characteristic Jewish ideas and language to Judaizers including ‘dogs’, and ‘workers of ‘evil’ (above). He uses paronomasia describing circumcisers as mutilators in Philippians 3:2. He then describes the church as ‘the Circumcision’; Israel by faith has gone global (3:3). ‘Worship in the Spirit of God’ is the language of the temple.39 He then catalogues his own credentials with reference to his circumcision, citizenship of Israel, tribal affiliation to Benjamin, his genuine Hebrew heritage, and his history as a Pharisee (Judaism), the law, and zeal recalling Phinehas and other zealous Israelites (e.g. Num. 25:11).

Other OT ideas pepper the text. These include the language of God and his fatherhood, Lord, Jesus as Christos, peace (Shalom), thanksgiving, joy, gospel, creation (Phil. 1:5–6; 2:7; 4:12,15), the day of the Lord, glory, praise, the word, prayer, the Spirit, salvation, the fear of God, holiness language, worship, resurrection, eternal destruction, idolatry (3:19), heaven, and church (, 3:6; 4:15).40
