Chapter Six
Angelina poled her way up the bayou in her swamp boat, dodging trailing branches, dead trees, and trotlines. The bayou was beautiful this time of day. So much better than the death gloom of her home. The setting sun cast a golden glow on the dark water and set it alive with fire. Pale blue shadows were reflected from the sky above. Tree frogs croaked in the dim light and the hum of cicadas filled her ears. The sunset in the bayou was bathed in an eerie color. Angelina knew the Atchafalaya Swamp like the back of her hand. She was expert at navigating the murky waters. She recognized another swamp boat on the Atchafalaya and knew they were heading the same direction she was. She knew the family. They had a son close to her age. He was handsome and Angelina had feelings for him. Passionate feelings. Once sheâd arranged to meet him in the woods. They had kissed and she had wanted him to do more, but he had pulled away. That had made her furious and sheâd hexed him. Now, the young man could hardly speak. That was how Angelina knew she had the power. She smiled to herself. She could do anything.
Thirty minutes later she reached her destination and pulled her boat onto the shore. She edged her way through the dense trees to the clearing. A few people had already gathered so she hid in the shadow of the trees and moved quietly around the clearing. She dodged trees and stumps to keep out of sight. I canât chance anyone telling my parents Iâm here. She shuddered as she thought of how angry they would be. She climbed an old cypress tree and settled herself in the fork of the branches for a better view.
Angelina watched the people gather below. There were people of all ages, race and color. Most wore brightly colored clothing, some were dressed in outlandish, garish colors while others wore only black. A few younger women wore only white. They seemed young and hesitant. One young woman looked as though sheâd been crying.
She noticed a tall, broad-shouldered man with long black hair. He was handsome and she swooned with teenage delight. He could be a rock star he was so hot. Angelinaâs passion stirred. She knew she must have him. The man wore a white flowing shirt tucked in at the waist and tight black pants that outlined his muscular legs and buttocks. His chest muscles strained against the thin fabric of his shirt. He had several gold chains around his neck that gleamed against his oiled skin. Angelina saw him nod and smile at a young woman. He had the whitest teeth sheâd ever seen. A pang of jealously flew through her body. Her mind focused on the young woman and she cursed her. No. She could not have him. Angelina knew she had the power to destroy, to maim and kill. She could extinguish a life in several seconds.
