Head propped on my fist, I lay quietly beside my fiancée and watched her sleep. She was so beautiful—well, always—but there was just something about the look of her after an extended scene that always made me fall just a little more in love with her. She looked so… relaxed. Given her increasing nightmares, moments like this were something to treasure.

She was something to treasure.

Unable to keep from touching her another second, I drew super-soft circles along her exposed shoulder blade and then slowly downward. She was still naked from our scene and thoroughly exhausted. I'd made sure of that. A good scene could be a million times better than pharmaceuticals when it came to facilitating sleep.

When my fingertips grazed the lingering scar along her flank, the same sense of pain and guilt that had flooded me the night of her attack returned with a vengeance. Because of my past, she'd almost lost her life, and my past was still stalking her. Well, both of us really, but only she mattered.

She was the best of me.

I'd planned to tell her everything today, the things I'd lived through—the things I'd done—but then Théo happened. My priorities had shifted, and I'd gone into protection mode. The fact he was still out there, that he could get his hands on her, that he could kill her, was a knife wedged in my heart.

But don't worry, ma chére, your death is coming very soon.

The words from his damn letter swirled in my mind. I had to protect her, physically as well as emotionally. To do the latter, I needed to tell her what I'd done, even if it terrified me. Garrett was right. I needed to bare my soul—whatever soul I had left anyway—and hope for the best.

I leaned close and pressed a kiss to the apex of her shoulder. I hadn't intended to wake her, but I was pleased when she flopped her head in my direction and a sleep-laden smile played over lips still a bit pink and plump from repeated use.

"Why aren't you asleep?" she murmured. "You should be as exhausted as I am." She paused. Her grin grew. "Daddy."

I chuckled and kissed her shoulder again. Then, for good measure, I gave her ass a quick, playful slap.

Truth was I was beyond exhausted, but she wasn't the only one of us having nightmares. Mine had returned, too. They'd gone mostly silent since Bree and I had settled into our relationship. With her, I'd felt a kind of peace I'd never before experienced, but since her attack, the nightmares had returned with a vengeance.

I hadn't wanted to bother Bree with them. She'd had enough on her plate, but after tonight, I knew I couldn't keep them from her anymore. What was it she'd once said to me?

Whatever happens to one of us happens to the other. If you hurt, I hurt.

Like pulling off a bandage, I closed my eyes and said it. "I've been having nightmares."
