Chapter Twelve

On the drive home, Bastian had time to break down what had happened play-by-play. He hadn’t planned on kissing Kinsley, especially with half of her body hanging out of the car. Not the most romantic way to kiss a woman for the first time. Well, technically the second time. He had completely forgotten about their make out snafu the summer before eighth grade until Holly Writtle asked if they had ever dated. As soon as Kinsley buzzed in with, “We were good friends in middle school and fell out of touch in high school,” the memory of them making out against that washing machine came flooding in like a tidal wave.

The trembling of her lower lip from the cold, the blue polka-dotted bikini she always wore every time he came over to swim, and his battle with whether or not he should press his luck and try for second base. Hearing her confess how much she used to like him, he was glad he’d kept his hands on her shoulders instead of following his urges and placing them elsewhere. That probably would’ve made her feelings of rejection far worse and the ability to return to friendship status nonexistent.

In the past twenty years, Kinsley had become a magnificently beautiful woman. Under normal circumstances, it would have no weight on Bastian’s decision whether or not to pursue her. In all honesty, it probably would have kept his playful flirting from becoming anything more since his pin-up ex-wife proved to be a vindictive she-devil. Hearing her complain about his preteen perfection, and the way she clumsily jogged back to his car, reminded him that inside that gorgeous body was the girl who used to flip him off when he tried to help her up from the floor at the roller skating rink.

When she leaned in to reach for her phone and he caught a whiff of that delicious floral scent she was wearing, it was all over. He had to kiss her and he wasn’t sorry that he did it this time around. The sound of his cell phone ringing disrupted his thoughts. Not wanting to take his eyes off the road, he answered it without checking the screen. “Bastian Harris.”

“Hi daddy.” It was the sweetest voice Bastian had ever heard in his life. No, correction. The sweetest voice the Lord had ever put on the planet, his daughter.

“Hey Jodi, baby. How’s my girl?” He always loved it when his daughter called. He talked to her at least twice a week during the school year. Teaching shooting classes in the evenings made it difficult to speak with her before she went to sleep. That’s why he loved summer. Her bedtime was later and he got to talk to her in the daytime when she would have been in school during the year.

“I’m good,” she said with a smile in her voice, “Whatcha doing?”

“Driving home from dinner at Ida Robinson’s house. Do you remember her?”

“Yep. She’s that nice old lady who watches me when you have to work and always makes us those weirdo desserts.
