The YWCA worked to help women and girls all over the world who were moving to cities and joining the work force.
Throughout the years that followed, Julia designed many more buildings for the YWCA throughout the state in cities like Berkeley, San Jose, Palo Alto, and San Diego. Her designs combined comfort, beauty, and practicality. One that she built in 1913 in Oakland featured a sunny interior courtyard.
Julia designed the YWCA building for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 which was hosted by the City of San Francisco. In 1924, on a piece of this exposition land, she built The Heritage for the Ladies Protection and Relief Society to provide housing and permanent care for the elderly. Morgan did so many projects for the YWCA throughout the country that she was eventually asked to move to the Midwest and become their full-time architect. She declined.
Julia accumulated a huge library of books in her San Francisco office. Many of these were given to her by her cousinâs husband, Pierre LeBrun, after he retired and closed his New York offices. Juliaâs office space also included a room with drafting tables, a bulletin board showing pictures of work under construction, and models of buildings. In this complex, she also had a small private office. Sometimes her friend, Maybeck, also used her office. Other employees such as engineers and crafts people worked out of the various building sites.
Throughout her career, Julia built in cities, foothills, and mountains. She thrived on all kinds of different projects including a Methodist Chinese Mission School in San Francisco, and many Arts & Crafts style houses that blended into their environment. Her houses were done in many different styles. She always tried to meet her clientâs wishes. She even built a warehouse for her brotherâs moving and storage business. In the twelve years after she returned to the Bay Area from Paris, Julia Morgan finished 300 commissions.
