CHAPTER 12

ELISE

The pyramid seemed even more massive on the inside than it appeared on the outside. I kept wandering through its halls and rooms, exploring new surroundings with every corner I turned. It seemed like the deeper I went, the more there was to discover.

The thought crossed my mind that I might get lost again, but I tried not to dwell too hard on that concept. If I worried, I'd just send myself in an unnecessary panic. I paid attention to my surroundings so that if I needed to — I would be able to retrace my steps and backtrack to the exit easier.

The whole time since I'd been exploring inside, I hadn't been brave enough to remove my oxygen helmet. However, I was getting readings from the data display on my life support suit that there was a breathable atmosphere.

The temperature also appeared to be safe to support life without a space suit. Although in my opinion, it was still relatively chilly — reading in at just below sixty degrees Fahrenheit. It was still better than the unforgivingly cruel subzero temperatures outside of the pyramid walls.

The stonework on the walls was ancient and abstract, a mixture of gray and sand in color.

I was still racking my brain trying to determine how this material got here in the first place, and why so much of it — enough to build these enormous structures. I'd never seen anything like it, and it was truly fascinating to be in this oddly comforting environment. I wasn't afraid, and I wasn't paranoid — which had to mean this place was safe and secure.

The stone walls themselves were gritty to the touch and seemed more fragile than they appeared, especially after I brushed my fingertips up against them a few times and a collection of a dusty residue was left slipping through my fingers.

I tried to be careful and not compromise the structural integrity of this place in general. I gradually worked my way inside the belly of the pyramid.

It wasn't like I worried that the entire building would come collapsing down around me at any unforeseen moment or something, but I was careful anyway. I calculated my movements and kept myself guarded and alert to my surroundings.

I was careful not to touch anything other than the walls a few times. I tried not to tamper with anything, although I was curious — especially about the strange markings that were on the wall. I had no idea what they meant.

There were circles and squares and hexagons… a few other shapes I didn't recognize. There were also a few writings on the wall that looked like they could be letters that formed words, but they were boxy and fragmented.

They would remain elusive unless we found somebody who could make sense of what it might mean. The engravings weren't deep, either. They looked like they had been carved less than an inch deep, and they were so old that I was afraid that if I touched them, they would smudge and disappear altogether.
