Rick and Andi filled her family in on their exploits since the virus struck and Jeff and Paul were particularly interested in the red-headed gang that was pursuing them.

“So you have been fighting the same men who raided our ranch. We were taken by surprise and felt the best solution for the kids was to cut and run. Were you able to kill any of the nasty bastards,” asked Andi’s brother, Jeff?

Andi sat next to Rick as he answered, “We killed three or four of the red-headed ones and perhaps a dozen of their followers. Oh, and Andi placed her knife against one man’s…err…private parts and threatened to separate him from his family jewels.

“Jeff, the bastard had a knife to Kate’s throat, and I would have cut it off if he hadn’t told us what we needed. A year ago I could have never done that, but when I saw him threaten Kate, I went nuts,” Andi said with no remorse in her voice.

Jeff replied, “You ran afoul of the Connor O’Shea gang. They were the American Clan of the Irish Mob and were based out of Seattle until the virus. They were killers before the virus struck and now have no self-restraint and will kill, torture, or enslave people at will. This is a bad bunch that is well trained, armed to the teeth, and never fails to seek revenge. We have both killed their men and women, and they will be coming for us.”

“Then that means we need to get the hell out of here and hide back at the compound until this blows over,” Rick answered.

Jeff replied, “Brother-in-law, It won’t blow over until one group or the other is dead. We need to hide, regroup, and come out fighting when we are stronger.”

Rick answered, “I agree.”

Paul came back in the house from his lookout duty and asked, “Have you seen any of those monster cats or killer rats?”

Andi answered, “Yes to both. Billy saved his girlfriend and her mother from a swarm of the rats, and we have probably killed 30 to 40 of the cats and a half dozen of the monster opossums.”

Harry spoke up and said, “I killed a bunch of them with a pickup and a trailer. Smashed kitties all over the place.”

They traded stories for another hour and then Rick asked, “Where do you plan to live? We have a nice place just north of Grants Pass. We’re setting up a combination cattle ranch and farm. The guys are fencing in 50 acres while we’re out here looking for you. We’d like you to join us. There will be plenty of food, and we certainly could help each other with security. We have more guns and ammunition than we could ever use thanks to our raid on our gun shop and a couple other in Grants Pass, but we need good people to man those guns.”

Paul asked, “How would we have enough housing for everyone?”

“Our location is remote, so we have brought in modular homes to handle our new additions.
