Apparently irrelevant was the tiny number of refugees and migrants—a mere 146 in 2016, most of whom were Ukrainian and not from Muslim-majority countries—who sought safety in Slovakia, a country relatively untouched by the crisis that saw hundreds of thousands of people flee war and economic devastation to reach Europe. For Drozd and the LSNS, the numbers were a mere distraction. Theirs is a politics of redemption, of reviving the short-lived motherland of the First Slovak Republic.

Here Drozd switched to a poem, an ode to Kotleba and the party’s vision for Slovakia. “Marian Kotleba has planted a small seed / And it grew into a big, beautiful tree / It has a treetop with branches and is blossoming and blossoming / There will be a rich harvest for those who desire the fruit.”
