Various tour boats sail from the small-boat harbor into a rugged, icy world that’s unbelievably rich in wildlife. On the way to Harriman Fjord, ships pass so close to a kittiwake rookery that you can see the eggs in the nests of the black-legged birds.

Honey Charters ( 888-477-2493; www.honeycharters.com; The Triangle) Offers tours of Blackstone Bay (per person $125) and Barry Arm ($175), both with a four-person minimum, as well as sightseeing trips to Cordova ($175) and Valdez ($175), which both have a 12-person minimum. It specializes in water-taxi transportation to public-use cabins and to remote hunting, fishing and hiking destinations. It’s $12 per nautical mile for up to 30 people; rates are 40% cheaper if you can coordinate drop-offs and pickups with other groups.

Major Marine Tours ( 800-764-7300, 274-7300; www.majormarine.com; Harbor Loop Rd) Has a USFS ranger on every cruise. It does a five-hour tour of glacier-riddled Blackstone Bay for $107/53 (plus tax) per adult/child.

Phillips Tours ( 472-2416, 800-544-0529; www.26glaciers.com; Harbor View Rd) Packs in 26 glaciers on a speedy boat ride for adult/child $139/79. Don’t blink.

Prince William Sound Cruises & Tours ( 472-2410, 800-992-1297; www.princewilliamsound.com; 1 Harbor Pier) Offers ‘quality time’ with the very active Surprise Glacier on its six-hour tour of Esther Passage (per adult/child $129/64.50).
