CHAPTER 22

“I was surprised to get your call.” Camille said, as she gave me a warm smile, placing the glass of red wine in my hand.

I shifted to get a bit more comfortable on her brown leather couch and I glanced around her soft cream colored painted living room with earth accents. I couldn’t get what she texted me out of my head. Even though Simone was usually right about these things, I had to see for myself.

“Yeah, Todd is working late again and well, I kinda hate to be in the house alone.”

“Oh, so you’re using me? Ah ha!”

That phrase sounded much better in my head. “No, no, it’s not like that, believe me, I just…”

“Kai, I’m just messing with you. Believe me, I used to hate being alone when my ex was on the road. I get it.” Camille winked at me as she headed back to the kitchen to fetch a plate of cheese, crackers and grapes.

“I hope I am not intruding like this… last minute and all?” I said.

“Oh gawd no, I love the company, besides, I was actually gonna give you a call and see what you were up too tonight, so it worked out perfectly.” Camille sat down next to me on the couch and crossed her legs Indian style. Camille had on an oatmeal colored v-neck t-shirt and matching linen pants. She looked very comfortable. Her hair was swooped up in a bun on the top of her head and I noticed she was wearing princess cut diamond earrings, 1 carat at least. Made me wonder just how much she was getting every month from her ex.

I picked up my wine and sipped on it, and Camille did the same. Silence fell between us and the only thing we could hear was the sound of our kids having a toddler conversation in the back room.

“I think our kids play well together.” Camille said, curling her legs up under her chin as she wrapped her arms around them.

“Yeah, they do.” I said feeling myself getting nervous being with Camille. I took a sip of my wine to help calm my nerves. Camille was hard to read - one minute she was into me, and the next, nothing.

“So you said Todd was a lawyer?”

“Yes, an entertainment lawyer.”

“Oh nice. Is that what he did in New York?

“No, actually, he was a divorce attorney there.”

“He could clean up here as a divorce attorney. No one stays married in LA.”

I felt a warm sensation cascade through my body from Camille’s comment. Not exactly what I wanted to hear right now. I looked down.

“Of course I wasn’t referring to you and Todd.” Camille continued quickly, picking up on my awkwardness from her off colored comment.

“Of course.” I said with a smile. I drank a little bit more of my wine.

“Either way, all attorneys work too much in my book. My sister is a lawyer and she’s always working. I was surprised when she told me she was engaged.”

“That’s your sister in Brooklyn, right?”

“Yep.
