Colt Ryden clambered up the trellis to the third floor of the old house. He shimmied over onto the roof that covered a second-floor sundeck and crept over to the window. Golden candlelight flickered against the pane. It made him think of treasure.

He peered inside. It was a New Age nightmare of hippy dippy shit. Crystals and candles, stinky oils and Satan stars. He shouldn’t have been surprised. In the movies, the Indians were all about smoking their weeds and dancing around fires. Or maybe this was the girl’s place.

“Maybe she’s a witch.”

The Indian and his girl were talking about something. He strained to hear what they were saying but could only make out a few words. It sounded like ‘San Saba well Crockett.” Colt must have misheard. San Saba was a river west of Austin, but the phrase made no sense.

The Indian went into the bathroom and Colt focused on the girl. She was packing a bag like they were leaving in a hurry. Had they already found the treasure? Impossible. He’d kept an eye on this house all night. So, why was she smiling? Probably about to do some yoga and summon the spirits.

Colt looked around the room and something caught his eye. Lying atop a folding table near the window lay a worn sheet of paper covered with lines and symbols. It was the map! He had to get his hands on it! But how? The Indian could return any second. He was just turning over the problem in his mind when the girl stood and began undressing. Instinctively, Colt grabbed his smartphone and activated the camera, but he stopped himself immediately.

“Dammit, Colt! You can’t do that stuff anymore. You’re a Knight of the Golden Circle now!” With only a small pang of regret, he turned off the camera and tucked the phone into his pocket. He watched as the girl entered the bathroom and closed the door behind her. A crimson wave of envy washed over him, and a bitter taste filled his mouth. Why couldn’t he get a girl like that?

The momentary pang of jealousy vanished in a surge of triumph. It looked as though those two would be busy for a few minutes. That meant the map was unguarded! He tried the window. It wouldn’t budge. Colt was momentarily stymied by this simple impediment. He had only planned on spying. He had no tools for breaking in, nor was he armed. His sidearm made for awkward climbing and he tended to bump it against things at inopportune times, so he had left it in his truck.

“What am I going to do?”

Lacking a better idea, he tried the window again and tugged with all his might. It budged an inch, enough for him to work his fingers underneath. He gave it another heave. With a slow shriek of protest, the window slid up.

He froze. Had anyone heard? He waited but all he could hear was the rasp of his own breath and the sound of running water from the shower.
