“What’s that in the bundle, madam?” he said. “You’re clinging to it as if it were full of jewels.”

For answer, Aladdin’s mother set the dish at the foot of the throne and humbly removed the second-best tablecloth. The glitter of the jewels lit up the Throne Room like a thousand torches, and the Grand Vizier had to blink and shade his eyes.

“Well, what do you say to that, Grand Vizier?” said the Sultan. “Have I got any jewels like those?”

“Not one,” said the Grand Vizier, grinding his teeth.

“No. And if he’s got presents like that to give me… Well, I don’t know what to say. What do you suggest?”

The Grand Vizier made an irritable gesture with his hand, as if he were dismissing a beggar.

“Ask for forty slaves,” he said, “each carrying a dish of pure gold, each dish to be filled with jewels like those. He’ll never be able to manage that.”

“Good idea,” said the Sultan. “Madam! Tell your son Aladdin that I’ll be glad to let my daughter marry him as long as he brings me… What was it?”

The Grand Vizier went through it again, and Aladdin’s mother nodded.
