Chapter Seventeen

Emme

“Tell Inspired.com we need those samples,” I said to Evelyn over the cell, pacing back and forth in Jax’s living room. “We need to know their products in order to answer their customers’ questions.”

“But, Emme,” Evelyn said. “They don’t want to spend the money to send us the inventory.”

I fought to keep my impatience in check, but it wasn’t easy. It’d been a rough day. I’d already spent an hour on the phone fighting with my insurance company about who should pay the fees to clean up my house’s charred remains as the city required. There was nothing left to salvage. Even now, when I thought about it, my throat closed around a new generation of unshed tears.

If all of that wasn’t enough to grow the pressure behind my eyes into a full-fledged headache, I’d also left several messages for Rebecca Lang, CEO of ClickandDress.com. She had not called me back. I pinched the bridge of my nose.

What else could go wrong?

But Evelyn didn’t deserve to be the victim of my frustrations. I took a deep breath and spoke in a calm voice. “The folks at Inspired.com are being penny wise and pound foolish. Do you want me to call them?”

“No, I’ll do it,” Evelyn said with the same kind of grit that had helped her raise her twins into a pair of model tweenies. “Now, tell me about you. Where are you staying?”

“It’s kind of a long story.” I crouched by the coffee table and checked for messages on my laptop. “I’m staying with a good Samaritan.”

“A good Samaritan?” Evelyn drew in a gasp. “As in a he good Samaritan?”

“Yes, I believe he’s a he.” In fact, I had ample confirmation of that.

“Well?” I could almost see the smirk on her face. “Is he cute?”

Cute wasn’t the word I’d used to describe Jax. Masculine for sure. Striking came to mind. Mind-blowing sexy shot to the top of the list.

“He’s okay,” and totally my type.

“Wait, wait, wait.” Evelyn’s grin danced in her voice. “What’s going on?”

I was about to tell her that nothing was going on when Jax marched into the living room, carrying his messenger bag tucked under one arm. At the sight of him, my heart fluttered and my brain quit. Yeah, something was going on all right, something inexplicable.

He rocked a pair of black jeans that flawlessly cradled his gorgeous ass and a plaid flannel shirt that played up the green in his eyes.

Jax in flannel?

Perfection.

He smiled at me. The dimple that was not a dimple flashed and I went into nuclear meltdown. I forgot who I was talking to or why.

Memories of the last few hours flared, snippets that paraded in my mind and moistened my sex. Jax, burrowed deep in my body, suckling my nipples, setting my body on fire with his mouth’s delicious suction. Jax, whispering his naughty brand of endearments in my ear, luscious, dirty words that turned me on and enhanced the pleasure of his delicious strokes. Jax consuming my ragged breaths as I climaxed…again.
