Move forward to 1972 and Her Majesty is nowhere to be seen on the next stamps but British influence meant that the new Air Malawi used predominantly British aircraft at that time and although a government-owned enterprise, its poor financial state led to its liquidation in 2013.

Katanga proclaimed its independence from the emerging Republic of Congo when the Belgian Congo collapsed in 1960. Katanga’s leaders had the support of the old colonial power Belgium and the commercial interests that mined the fledgling state’s vast mineral resources. This, of course, had devastating effects to the Congolese economy and with the help of the UN and USA, the two states were reunited in early 1963.

In its short life, Katanga issued several sets of postage stamps; some of the last were these of 1961, showing two extremes of aviation at that time, a Farman H.F.II biplane and the tail of an early Boeing 707 with a livery that betrays its origin from the Belgium national airline Sabena. These jets were still very much in their infancy showing how much the Belgians valued their former territory.

Uganda is another part of Africa that came under colonial rule, and like many countries in east Africa it was Britain which was predominant until independence in 1962. Unfortunately, much strife and a bloody guerrilla war that cost tens of thousands of lives only ceased when democracy was established in 1986.

Uganda was called the Pearl of Africa by no less an authority than Sir Winston Churchill and the country is undoubtedly one of the most stunning nations on the continent, boasting wonderful landscapes such as the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains and the immense Lake Victoria whilst the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to the famed mountain gorillas. Neighbouring countries have been on the well-trodden tourist-trail for some time and now Uganda is becoming increasingly popular and notwithstanding the poor road infrastructure aviation is stepping in and this series of stamps really give a good insight into the country and its aviation in 1984.
