In line with all air transport, the use of aircraft is heavily weighted towards passengers, and so it is in the broking world – there are far more specialist passenger charter brokers than air freight brokers. In turn, many of these passenger brokers specialize in particular niches in the market – be it sport (and even this breaks down), entertainment, executive and so on. In the air freight world this is less the case, although there are areas of specialization, such as livestock and automotive, but these are few and far between. There are freight brokers now around the globe, but the larger international ones tend to be Europe-based, particularly in the UK, which is fitting as that is pretty much where it all started. However, the same cannot be said for the airlines being used, as they are far more widely spread.

As we face the future, the broker is looking at the IL-76s, where we have gone from a market of 30 operators with 100 machines to barely 10 to 12 air operator’s certificates with 30-odd aircraft. Only four or five can now operate in EU airspace; two of these have Stage 4 noise-compliant aircraft only – a total of seven airframes – the rest have Stage 2 versions, and it is much tougher for them to operate in the commercial market. If it carries on like this, and with no Afghan traffic, there are likely to be only four or five carriers by 2015 or 2016, with a total of 20 to 25 aircraft in service.
