Chapter Two

Matt attended a group study session in the mess hall the next day, and was walking back to his dormitory when someone called his name.

“Billings. Airman Billings.”

He paused and turned to see who’d called him.

Master Sergeant Drake Bogart was headed in his direction.

What the hell? His unit had met up with the 58th for training missions, but it seemed highly irregular that one of their members would be here now. It was dead week, and unless they got called out on another real search and rescue, all they had to do was study. As the handsome man approached, Matt blinked to make sure he wasn’t a mirage. “Master Sergeant?”

Bogart stopped in front of him. “I’m glad I found you. I’ve been here for a while, but didn’t want to interrupt your study group.”

Matt didn’t understand. “No disrespect, Master Sergeant, but what are you doing here?”

“I wanted to speak with you. Can we go somewhere private and talk?”

He raised his armload of books. “I was taking these back to my dorm. I guess you could come along.”

Bogart eyed him levelly. “Will your roommate be there?”

“I don’t know.” Matt was confused. Why does that matter? He remembered Jason and a couple others had headed to the rec hall to shoot some pool and unwind. “No. He’s gone to the rec to blow off some steam.”

It occurred to him that Bogart was there to discuss what had happened the day before. He added, “It doesn’t matter, though. Jason was there yesterday. He knows what happened.”

“What happened,” Bogart repeated, appearing slightly confused. “I didn’t come here to talk about yesterday.”

Matt faced him. “Then—again, no disrespect, Sergeant. But what did you want to talk about?”

“Let’s go to your barracks. I’d rather talk there.” He fell into step alongside Matt until they reached the large, tan-colored housing unit.

Matt opened the front door and motioned for the sergeant to go ahead of him. He led him down the hall to the room he shared with Jason and held that door, too. “They’re called dormitories now, Master Sergeant.”

Bogart walked in and glanced around. “Oh, I know. You’ve probably got your own johns now, too, don’t you? I didn’t have my own until well after graduation from the specialist course.”

“No, sir, we share with two other airmen. But at least we have semi-private rooms here. Better than the thirty cots in one big room we had back in basic.”

“No shit there, Airman.” Bogart turned to face him. “And you don’t call a sergeant ‘sir’.”

“Sorry, Master Sergeant. I knew that. I’m still confused about what you’re doing here. If it isn’t concerning what happened yesterday—”

Bogart took a step closer. “In a way, it does concern yesterday. I needed to make sure I didn’t get my wires crossed somewhere. Because I think I felt a connection between us.” He arched an eyebrow as he studied Matt’s face.

Matt was gobsmacked. They hadn’t said more than a few words to each other that didn’t relate to the search. How could this guy
