The Sixteen Basic Human Desires
In order to better understand yourself and the people around you, letâs examine each of the sixteen motivators. Iâll walk you through how each motivation manifests in someoneâs behavior, depending on whether the drive is strong, weak, or neutral.
1. Power: The Desire to Influence and Lead Others
People who score high on power like to be in control in all situations. Some say that high power people are manipulative of others, while others say theyâre ambitious. They enjoy influencing others and assuming leadership roles.
When someone is low on power motivation, it means theyâre more service-oriented and enjoy working directly with people. They are non-directive; they want to support other peopleâs decisions more than they want to lead. Low power people prefer to stay in the background and avoid the spotlight.
The world needs all types of people, and itâs very helpful to understand where people fall on the spectrum. A good friend of mine who I work closely with is very high on power, but our other coworker is very low. Personally, I lean toward the middle to low range, so Iâm considered âaverage.â We complement each other because of our differences.
