Jerry was actually feeling all right as he let the bicycle coast down the road. Reminiscing on what it had been like to ride a bike down that very same road, back in his teens, gave him a burst of genuine energy, and for a few minutes, he was happy to let all of his cares slip away. After a while, the pattern of the curves started coming back to him, old muscle memory seeping up to the surface.

Then he remembered the one treacherous bend, which looked like it was just a gentle meander to the right that could be taken at speed. The problem was a crumbling sandstone outcrop right above the road. Even a slight rain would wash a stripe of grit and gravel down a slight dip that crossed the road. By the time he registered he was in the curve, it was too late.

Ted was in the lead, and his wheels went right out from under him. Jerry managed to miss Ted before sliding out himself, bouncing hard off the pavement.

Jerry’s gun didn’t have a sling, so he’d just slid it down the back of his camouflaged hunting jacket to free up both his hands to ride the bicycle. As he went tumbling, the solid shotgun trapped inside his clothing battered his back. By the time Jerry came to a stop, a few yards off the road, the pull and pressure it had put on the jacket had torn the fabric and blown out the zipper.

Meanwhile, Rocky was letting it rip with a streak of foul language.

“Damn it, Rocky. Shut the hell up!” Ted yelled.

“Why don’t you stuff it,” Rocky shouted back at him.

Jerry extracted himself from a tangle of bicycle and undergrowth. Dusting himself off, he could identify several places that were going to bruise like hell. He also had a painful twinge in his back where he must’ve pulled a muscle while rolling over his shotgun. He gave the gun a quick inspection as he picked himself up, and it didn’t look like the fall had caused anything more than cosmetic damage.

“Those guys running around tossing cabins? You’re telling them exactly where we are, dumbass,” Ted said to Rocky.

“Yeah, Rocky!” Jerry snapped. “Please. Be as pissed as you want, just be pissed quietly.”

Rocky picked up the bike he’d been riding and hurled it into the trees. At least he didn’t scream while doing it. His shopping bag looked like it had survived, but the contents had gone flying all over the road.

“Let’s just get together whatever we can and get to our cabin,” Jerry said. He made a cursory attempt to locate the food he’d lost before picking up the bike. The tumble he’d taken had bent both the front and rear wheels, and knocked the handlebars seriously askew. He decided it wasn’t worth the effort, and took a cue from Rocky, throwing it off the road.

Ted’s bike didn’t look like it had taken any damage, but his clothes on his right side were badly torn and there was definite road rash going on.
