Chapter 27

Warm sunlight filtered through the curtains into the bedroom where Jake lay next to Sage in her king-size bed. She’d fallen asleep in the Jeep on the way home last night. In her apartment, while he’d been in the shower, she had undressed, then fallen asleep on top of the covers.

He’d tucked her into bed and joined her there, drawn her into his arms and let her sleep curled against him for the short remainder of the night.

She was exhausted, he knew. Worry and uncertainty did that to a person. She was out of her element in all this, finding her way through murky, unknown territory, though she was handling the situation far better than most people would.

As he lay on his side, Sage’s head tucked beneath his chin, Jake thought of last night, recalling the instant he had walked through Trace’s back door and seen the worry on Sage’s beautiful face, the tears in her eyes as she threw herself into his arms.

He remembered the powerful surge of emotion he had felt, the feeling of rightness, the bone-deep knowledge that this was his woman, the one he hadn’t realized he had been waiting for all his life.

Sage belonged to him.

The problem was what to do about it.

He listened to her deep, even breathing, and asked himself if he was willing to give up the life he had been living for more than a decade, the excitement he always felt when he started over somewhere new, the adrenaline rush of an unknown mission.

Was he willing to make those kinds of changes for Sage?

The truth was he had been moving in that direction even before he’d met her. He’d been sending down roots here in Houston, making friends, allowing himself to feel things, experience life in a way his work wouldn’t allow before. Like joining the Big Brother program. Like spending time with Felix Porter and his family.

There were people he cared about in Houston, people who cared about him. A wife and family wouldn’t be the burden he’d once believed. They would be his joy.

Sage would be his joy.

He waited for the punch in the gut, the voice in his head that warned, Time to hit the road, buddy. Get the hell out before it’s too late. But the punch never came. Maybe he was finally ready to settle down, to explore a different side of himself than the tough, go-it-alone guy he’d been since his father had died.

He thought of that day and a sharp pang centered in his chest. He’d been a senior in high school, and his father’s death had hit him hard. He remembered his mother’s grief and how he had worked the farm every extra minute, dawn to dark, to help her.

He thought of his stepfather, the man his mother had finally married. Jake had left the farm so she would have a chance to be happy again. He thought of how he had joined the marines hoping to make a place for himself in the world.
