TWELVE—Twilight at the Oasis

Through the side window of the Junkers Ju-90 transport plane as it made its approach to the Almaza Aerodrome northeast of Cairo, Dodge could see forever. Not that there was a lot to see. The landscape below was a mostly featureless expanse of sand, framing a vast verdant triangle; the Nile Delta, where the longest river in the world discharged into the Mediterranean Sea, bearing hundreds of miles worth of nutrient rich sediment. He strained his eyes for a glimpse of the famed pyramids of Giza, but if they were there at all, they blended so perfectly into the golden landscape that he could not distinguish them.

The lumbering aircraft descended and touched down with a shudder on the macadam, and made its way to the hangars comprising the aerodrome. The field was a hive of activity, with planes of varying sizes showing the flags of several countries from around the globe. German Focke Wulf FW 200 Condors were lined up next to British deHavilland Albatrosses. There was even a lone Douglas DC 3 from the United States. Although it seemed to be business as usual on the ground, Dodge knew that the presence of these aircraft was symbolic, or perhaps symptomatic, of a deadly political game being played out not only here, but around the world. Throughout its history, Egypt had been the focus of attention for great empires. Until only recently, Egypt had been, in varying degrees, under British control, but since the signing of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of 1936, the British military presence had been restricted to the Canal Zone, leaving a vacuum in which foreign agents vied for control of the nation’s strategic location and resources to support a looming conflict that would be played out on the world stage. The current power struggle between England and Nazi Germany was just the latest iteration of a timeless cycle.

As the plane came to a stop and the four BMW 132 Radial engines driving the main props cut out, Dodge unbuckled his seatbelt and joined Liz and Farber at the exit. The air rushing in through the open hatch was sharp and hot, like the blast of heat from an open furnace door.

“It’s like we never left Palm Springs,” Liz remarked, fanning herself with a hand.

“If you’ve seen one desert,” Dodge remarked. “You’ve seen one too many.”

Although there had been a few tense hours following their leap from the Sunset Limited, the journey across the world had been mostly uneventful, punctuated by a few refueling stops where they had been given the opportunity to stretch their legs and not much else. Farber had kept them on a short leash, and offered little in the way of enlightenment as to the purpose behind the Nazis’ interest in Dodge, fending off inquiries with the assurance that his superior would explain everything once they arrived in Egypt. But as Farber stood at the top of the stairs leading down from the aircraft, gazing at the empty tarmac, Dodge got the impression those answers would not be immediately forthcoming.
