Stony Man Farm, Virginia

The night shift was well under way, but Barbara Price was manning the information center, a mug of strong coffee cupped in both hands. Without direct communications with Mack Bolan, the control center was only able to pick up on secondary information. So far, there had been one mysterious rescue reported, of a truckload of injured refugees. The details about the rescuer were sketchy, but they matched Bolan’s description—tall, powerful, with piercing blue eyes.

“Way to go, Striker,” Price whispered and she took another sip of coffee to keep awake.

“We’re getting a hit on the search engines,” Akira Tokaido announced. “Inspector Brandon Stone of Interpol.”

“Inspector?” Price asked. “But Stone is Striker’s military cover.”

“Must have been a last-minute decision,” Kurtzman spoke up. “Don’t worry. We have protocols in place.”

Price nodded. “I know we do. It just means that Mack’s stumbled into something, and he hasn’t had the time to properly build a cover.”

“Next time he’s in the middle of an earthquake and a civil war, we’ll make sure he’s better prepared,” Kurtzman remarked.

“Damn it,” Price snapped. “The Turkish state department is making the search.”

“Based on an e-mail from the ministry of defense,” Kurtzman noted, pointing to another subwindow. “Possibly the Jandarma is interested.”

“Striker must be rattling some cages in Van,” Tokaido added.

“We’ve dealt with sticky situations before. It’s nothing new for us,” Kurtzman said.

“The cover’s in place,” Akira announced. “As far as the Turkish government is concerned, Inspector Brandon Stone has been investigating, undercover, in the region for the past several months.”

“We’ll leak some more information if Striker ever gets back to us,” Price responded.

“When he gets back to us,” Kurtzman corrected her.

Price looked at the screen. “It’s still feeling iffy to me. I hate it when Striker goes on an unsanctioned mission like this.”

“Striker does what he does,” Kurtzman replied. “It’s not up to us to tie him down with rules or regulations.”

Price took another sip of foul brew. “Just so we don’t have to clean up the mess from this mission’s aftershocks.”
