Chapter 15: Robin

Robin glanced out the kitchen window on the last day of February. The icicles on the eaves dripped steadily, hanging down almost far enough to obscure her view. While she watched, a section broke and crashed to the ground, clearing her line of sight. All afternoon chunks had been falling outside. Spring might not be far away. Hard to believe she and Kory had been here almost all winter—over four months. They’d woken this morning to a warm chinook wind and the thaw.

A thick chain of clouds remained in the east, while the west was clear.

The cold would probably hit again soon—winter probably wouldn’t be over this early into the new year, but it might be time to pack. They wanted to be ready to leave without notice if the weather changed for more than a couple of days. One of the few things to count on in this post-asteroid world was extreme and unpredictable weather.

Robin broke from her reverie at the sound of Kory stomping his boots at the end of the hall before joining her in the warm kitchen, his cheeks red from being outside in the fresh air.

“I relocated Everett,” he said, scrubbing at his hands with soap under the intense pressure of the sink’s running water. “I hauled his body toward the hills and buried him close to a clump of trees. Digging was almost impossible because the ground is like iron, thaw or not, so I stopped. He’s got a shallow grave. The ground is still frozen for at least two feet down, so scavenging coyotes or something might find him.”

“At least the Joneses can’t eat him.” A wave of nausea rose and dissipated in seconds. All day, she’d imagined the faint smell of decomposition from when she’d helped load Everett’s body for transport. At least the corpse was finally gone.

“It was practically balmy out there most of today, but the temperature was dropping like a stone as I put the snowmobile away. Back to cold tomorrow.” He kissed her and nuzzled his cold nose on her neck. She squeaked but didn’t move. “You smell good.” He looked down with a mischievous smile.

“Anything else interesting out there?” She handed him a mug of hot chocolate and threw in a handful of shriveled marshmallows.

He winked as he stirred the marshmallows, fished them out with a spoon, and scooped them into his mouth. “A fresh set of tracks. Somebody’s come as far as the last knoll behind us, at least twice since the last dump of snow four days ago. Looks like they stayed a while because they flattened the snow. Our visitor left on foot, back to their snowmobile. Farther away, the snowmobile tracks turn southwest. Probably Jones and company, monitoring us.” His words were at odds with his playful tone.

“Maybe they want to make sure they can get their supplies in a few weeks.” Robin felt sick again, her stomach churning.

“Maybe they’re wondering if they need to wait.” His eyes met hers over the rim of his mug.
