I took Time magazine

to 6th grade

showing the U.S. map

with Soviet missile targets

by positions 1 through 3.

Priority 1 sites were the most important

and got the most ICBMs targeted at them.

We were glad Detroit was a 1—

we were proud of our Tigers.

But we thought the Soviets

didn’t understand how important we were

outside of Pontiac, only getting a 2.

We deserved much more than the 20 ICBMs

pointed at us.

Day One for Jerry Kitchen

September ‘68

walking to 3rd grade

you from Lakewood entrance

me from Denby

as the Tigers head to the Series.

By October black-and-white TVs in every class.

Appreciating Michigan wildflowers was gay

in assembly-line Drayton Plains.

Now North Hollywood

and somewhere in Michigan around a GM plant.

29 more years have passed

We hold on

purest chance

trilliums left

where Cooley meets the Nature Center

moving shoots toward snow.

By you today a hepatica in bloom.

We won’t see it because we have plans.

Did I ever show you

the hepatica I transplanted to my tree garden?

Did I ever show you

Isabelle Barkell’s transplanted yellow violet?

I pick a lavender hepatica blossom

stem thinner than a toothpick

lay it on the straight European porn magazine

you’d hid in the basement of the abandoned house.
