It was still early morning when he reached RJ’s house. He stopped the Trident across the road and rubbed his face. He didn’t want to startle the old man, and could use a little shuteye. He nosed the vehicle onto RJ’s drive. He’d park it back by the barn and snooze a couple of hours.

PING PING PING! Alex jumped high enough to hit his head on the canopy of the Trident. He looked around wildly. A bright light blinded him a moment later. “What in the blue hell are you doing!” It was RJ.

Alex laughed and immediately relaxed. He looked around for a release for the canopy. He wasn’t having much luck. RJ knocked on the glass again. “Side of the seat towards the back, fly-boy!” He found a round button there and pressed it.

RJ stepped back as the canopy hissed, lifting up and gliding forward. Alex sheepishly waved to RJ. “I uh… I upgraded.”

“Where’s my moped, hmm?” The old man was grimacing.

“Yeah, about that… We need to talk.” Alex’s demeanor changed as thoughts about his father again flooded his mind.

“I imagine you have an awful lot to talk about. Let’s make it brief, though. If you’re driving one of those, it means the Militia can’t be far behind.”

Alex sat at the kitchen table across from RJ a short while later. He had finished telling him about what had transpired on his trip to Cheyenne (“What? You scraped up my bike?!) and about what had happened once he had gotten inside. He was careful to leave out the part about Marcus.

RJ played with the glass of water he had sitting before him as he spoke. “I know you’re no killer, Alex. I know that was your father’s job, not yours. Still, you should have killed that guard. He wouldn’t have been able to hit that button if you had.”

“I know that, RJ. I just… I didn’t sign up for this, you know?”

“But you did.” RJ looked up. “You didn’t have to go there. You knew you were going into a hornet’s nest.”

“And I would have got out without killing anyone at all if the Trident hadn’t started shooting…”

“You mean doing its job?” RJ hit the table with his fist. “It’s a war machine, Alex. It’s a war machine from a military installation full of trained military personnel.” he sighed deeply. “You’re damn lucky to be alive.

“If you’re going to keep tangling with the Militia, you’re going to have to learn to kill. Every man that raised a weapon to you tonight wasn't trying to disarm you. They weren't trying to capture you. They only wanted you dead.”

Alex shook his head. “I know… Anyway… Why didn’t you tell me about my dad?”

RJ shifted uncomfortably. “What about your dad?”

“That’s the last thing I saw before the alarm sounded. It said the General… It said Tim Preston was in charge.”

The old man whispered “Damn it” as he rubbed his face. “I can tell you in all honesty that I didn’t know he was running the show, Alex.
