Chapter 4: Metaphors and Stories

Why are metaphors and stories so powerful? The power lies in their ability to bypass the critical factors of the mind. Always remember that people want to escape into trance. People want to space out. Recall from the previous chapter how I emphasized the ages-old practice of storytelling around the campfire from our hunter/gatherer past. If you go back far enough, there was no written word, so most everything was communicated by and through stories.

Metaphors are critically important to CH/NLP because they are at the very heart of our skills. Most trainers don’t have a clue about metaphors or how to leverage them. To really get into a story, you have to let go of the critical factors of the mind so you can get lost in the story, to surrender to it. That’s hypnosis in a nutshell! And again, people want to go into that altered state when listening to a really good story. Rapport is still absolutely key to this process.

The power of metaphors and stories totally applies to movies. Movies have to present characters that you can relate to in order for you to really get hypnotized by them. Or you have to really identify with the theme or idea of the movie.

If your goal is to be a good hypnotist, and especially if you want to be a really good conversational hypnotist, you simply must become a great storyteller. Metaphors can lead step by step into deeper layers of consciousness. One such layer would be heightened awareness. When you come out of a really superbly crafted scary movie, everything scares the living daylights out of you, right? That’s because you’re in a very heightened state of awareness. But it’s important to note that same thing with comedy. After you see a really well-crafted comedy movie, everything becomes funny! This also applies to romance movies, or inspirational movies like Rocky. Whatever big-picture genre or theme the movie contains, if it was done well it creates a very heightened state of awareness to that theme in the target’s life. It’s a very powerful leverage point for you to lead your target where you want them to go.

Most good stories involve the ide of obstacle removal, such as in Cinderella with her stepsisters. There is some kind of obstacle standing in the way of the protagonist achieving their objective or goal or dream. So let me ask you this: What would happen if…
