It was January 1978. Gino was on a holiday in Rome, where I was living. We met at the first Italian gay association. It was the classic love at first sight story. We fell in love, and Gino stayed, leaving everything—his job and his ex-boyfriend.

In 1980, we moved to Palermo, where Gino grew up and where we still live. We have been together for about forty years sharing our love, our job, and our politics—we are cocreators of Arcigay, an essential Italian gay association, and opened the first gay club in Palermo, called Neo.

On June 28, 1993, we celebrated a symbolic wedding in Piazza Pretoria, which was a bit shocking because it was totally against the national and international idea of Sicily as a place exclusively ruled by Mafia.

Many have asked us about the secret for everlasting love. We have always loved and respected each other without expecting to change one another. We never promised each other an everlasting love, but instead we live day by day in peace without asking ourselves if and how long this is going to last . . .
