Fit out

Though one may not associate a vessel’s fit out with the all-important factors of weight and balance, it is nonetheless crucial to consider the effects that every item has upon the vessel’s trim and seaworthiness. The position of the RIB’s batteries can be critical for trim and must be well secured in a fully watertight position. How much offset should be given to the helm console and to the engine, especially in an effort to counteract propulsion torque? Where is the optimum location for under-deck fuel tanks? Where should the reserve engine be located – up in the fore-peak above the anchor locker or strapped to the arch-mast on the transom’s inside face? Such decisions, when correct, will not only enhance a boat’s performance but may make the difference between a boat that is surefooted in all sea states and one that struggles when the going gets tough.
