Dare moved Aden closer to his chest. Aden was at a loss for words, so he did the talking. “What does this mean for us? How do I keep Aden safe? This new guy is not going to be able to go for subterfuge this time. Aden’s already on to them.” Dare felt him shiver.

“Wysocki said Manny Lopez is going to try the direct approach, kidnapping. According to Bruno, and we confirmed this through an FBI informant in the drug cartel, the man to whom Bruno sold Aden is a powerful drug lord. He works for the Mexican cartel in their Southwestern operation. He wants his property.”

Dare’s face froze.

“But Bruno didn’t have any money. I had to pay for the gas and food on the way out here,” Aden protested.

“All part of his cover…. He banked the money offshore as soon as he received it. The forensic accountants at the FBI said he had quite a sum of money tucked away, enough to retire somewhere without an extradition treaty with the U.S. Lopez gave Bruno half of his cut up front. Lopez is going to come to Albuquerque loaded for bear.”

“Can’t they pick up Lopez in Denver?” Aden asked.

“Lopez hasn’t broken the law yet. He can say he paid Bruno for something else, and the money in Bruno’s account has no label saying Aden. Until Lopez tries to kidnap him, we have no case against him.”

“Aden is bait? He didn’t consent to be bait,” Dare roared.

“We’re not using him as bait. His mere existence and the quarter mil Vasquez already paid to Wysocki and Lopez make him bait whether he agrees or doesn’t.” Hector took a swallow of Coke.

“Even if we pick him up on suspicion or intent, we can only hold him for seventy-two hours, the same amount of time we held Bruno without pressing charges and he and Manny have a thing. They were sleeping together. Bruno said he won’t testify against him. If Bruno hadn’t tried to clock my deputy, he would have booked as soon as we unloaded your things from the truck. He would have sent Lopez back to get Aden.”

“So Aden is bait. Is the FBI going to help, or are we in this sorry mess on our own?” Dare asked.

Aden finally broke down and started to cry. “I’m sorry I got everyone involved in my troubles. I’ll move out, Dare, and then you won’t be at risk.”

“You’ll do no such thing. This wasn’t the way I wanted it to happen, but you’re moving in with me. Since all of your things are already in the guesthouse, we can move them gradually into the house. You’re mine now, and I’m not losing you to anyone, even a fucking drug lord.”

Aden gave Dare a furtive glance. “What about, eh…you know?” he whispered.

“We’ll still wait, baby. You can stay in the guest room, but I want you protected, and you won’t be if you are alone in the guesthouse. Ranger isn’t enough now that the situation has changed.
