Chapter 4

Xavier bolted upright so fast that I flew back onto the couch. Logan came crashing in the room right after him, his motions fluid.

The giant crossed his bulging arms. “Abel wants you both back at the den for the King’s census. And for information regarding the whereabouts of the tax files. Now.”

Fear coated the back of my throat, thick and metallic. Whatever this werewolf drama was, I wanted no part of it. I frantically looked around for Lucy but did not see her anywhere.

Xavier said with forced calm, “Matt, you of all wolves-”

“You’re not the alpha anymore, Xavier.” The giant’s-Matt’s-face softened a bit and he uncrossed his arms. “I actually agree with you. Logan and you should be able to leave with the girls, get them to safety until all this calms down. But I can’t disobey direct orders from my alpha.”

I heard a crash then a scream. A hoarse voice barked, “I’ve got your pet, Logan! And twenty of us surround the house! Game’s up!”

Xavier and Logan were beginning to make rustling noises. A strong animal odor filled the room and both of their eyes flashed with a silver sheen. I cringed.

The big man shook his head. “Don’t change. Sniff the air. Nearly the whole pack came for you. This isn’t worth fighting or dying over. Just leave the two women at the den, show up for the census count to make the King’s wolves happy, find the tax papers, and you are free to roam until next census.”

“Xavier, don’t change,” I whispered. “They have Lucy. Please.”

He glanced at me, his eyes huge and silvery. Slowly he and Logan returned to normalcy.

“Fantastic,” Matt said dryly. “Now it’s marching time.”
