I groaned and rolled over, praying the noise would stop. When it didn’t, I stumbled out of bed, grabbing my boxer shorts along the way to the door. Whoever the fuck thought it was okay to wake me up this early had a death wish.

“What,” I growled, yanking open the door.

I stood back, shocked to see Sam standing there. He was the last person I expected to stop by.

“Hi, sorry to turn up unannounced like this, but I got concerned when you called in sick.”

He paused to look embarrassed and shoved his hands into the pockets of his suit pants.

“Anyway, I just wanted to check up on you and make sure everything’s okay. Clearly I just got you out of bed.”

“Yeah, I’ve been in bed all day,” I muttered.

It wasn’t a lie.

I ran my hand through my hair. “I’ve been throwing up and just feeling like shit. I didn’t want to spread that around the office.”

Sam frowned and took a step back. “Okay, well I won’t keep you. I just wanted to check and see how things were going with Jackson?”

Ah, so that’s the real reason he stopped by.

I frowned, leaning against the doorframe.

“It’s just I haven’t heard from him, and I thought maybe you had.”

I winced and shook my head. “Sorry, no. With being sick and all…”

Sam nodded. “Of course. I just wanted you to know that this whole thing is fairly time sensitive. We really need Jackson to sign soon. You know what's in it for you if you help me.”

“Sure,” I muttered. “I'll keep that in mind.”

I forced a smile. He nodded and mumbled a goodbye before walking off. I closed the door and stood against it, leaning my head back against it.

“Shit,” I said under my breath.

The bedroom door creaked open. I jumped and looked up to see Jackson standing in the doorway, frowning at me.

“Care to explain what that was about?”
