Chapter Four
A Stranger in a Strange Land
Plunker’s Moon was a lot better than it sounded. We left the ship and found our way towards the land port. We both went in quickly and quietly, giving false last names to the authorities. It didn’t take long and soon we were both programmed into their populations system. From that small office we left the space port and headed toward the only town on Plunker’s moon. It was old fashioned. There weren’t any high risers that blocked out the sun. There were a lot of green trees, not the artificial ones either.
With each breath, I felt fresh, clean air fill my lungs. There was a main street. Hover cars periodically passed and kicked up dust but mainly folks were walking. Men and women, children swinging between them. Everyone had a smile plastered on their face and it made me suspicious. How could this rundown planet have so many happy people? They didn’t even have a synthetic booth set up. I glanced around. Was that real fruit? I pointed to it and turned to Sally. “Do you think that’s...”
Sally shrugged. She narrowed her eyes at those who waved a welcome.
There were only a few shops. It was mainly generic places where they were selling local produce or crafted jewelry. They had a bookstore, which was a plus. You couldn’t find too many places that sold actual books. Now a days, everything was on a holovid. Hell, the author could read you their book. That was not my thing; I still liked the feel of paper in my hands. “I think this is a keeper.” I grinned.
Sally saw the bookstore and rolled her eyes.
The people here seemed awful friendly. We got a couple of smiles and a few hellos. Mainly we kept to ourselves as we walked the street. There were trees everywhere. I went over to one and plucked a leaf. It was scratchy as I rubbed it between my fingers, but it felt real. There were homes, mainly five stories but they were slightly beaten down. The walls were dull and in some placed chipped. Still, if that was all that was wrong here, I think Plunker’s Moon was our new home. Our. The word made me pause.
I finally stopped soaking in the surrounding and thought about the events that had me unsure of every breath. Sally wanted me. Micah was dead. We were fugitives. My mind was reeling. I think I’d rather look at the sights than deal with these overwhelming emotions.
“I think I just saw a bird...” Sally said, glancing at the sky with furrowed brows.
“Hey, a tour.” I read the sign aloud. It was a small square projection beside a big building that looked like it was freshly colored. “Tour the moon in a brand new hover car complete with a guidance system.”
“Sounds romantic,” Sally said, and she watched me closely, probably for my reaction.
It did sound dreamy and we still needed to do that whole talking thing. She went up to the counter to rent one while I waited near the road.
