Sitting in the farthest corner, his back against the wall, Gervasio drummed his fingers on the table. His brother was taking too long. That’s okay. He’d wait however long it took. His brother pretended not to want to know when things happened, but, deep down, he always had to know. His brother’s nosiness worked in Gervasio’s favor. If the police ever caught up with him, and his brother broke, the guy would unintentionally give them bad information—fed to him by Gervasio.

Finally. Cristobal crossed the room to the table and sat. “You look well.”

“Sweet love from something so pure make a man well.” His eyes twitched, the way they did after he had a good piece of tail. Bella had been the best he ever had. And, oh, what he wouldn’t give to have her again. But that would have to wait.

“Hermano ...” Cristobal’s eyes narrowed.

His brother wasn’t stupid. Though Gervasio hadn’t come right out and uttered the entire truth, it was enough for Cristobal to understand. The look in his brother’s brown eyes said so.

Gervasio grinned wide, like the cat that ate the canary. “You must know why I come.”

“No.”

Gervasio reached into his pocket, pulled a beautiful gold signet ring out, and placed it on the table. The ring bore a symbol, a pair of crossed scythes—which represented Gervasio’s gang. It was the mark he gave to all his property. Bella’s brand was just one example.

“I love this design.”

“Usted la marca.”

“Si. Ella es mía.” Oh yes, she was his. She had always been his. And his mark would show that to the world.

Cristobal rubbed his face. “¿Por qué? ¿Por qué hiciste esto a ella? Ella es inocente.”

Innocent? His brother truly believed the girl was innocent. Because no one knew who she really was, except for him. But he wasn’t about to tell his brother the truth, the real reason he had claimed her. No. Yet, he had to make Cristobal believe what he did say.

Gervasio leaned forward. “He take, I take.”

“He took nothing. I am still here.”

Ah. His brother fell for the lie perfectly. It started with the Bible. How much time had gone by since that visit? The one where Cristobal told him about his newfound faith in God. The faith Cristobal had garnered from the counselor’s teachings. That little thing that made Cristobal disloyal in his eyes. So what if it was utter bullshit. It made for a convincing story, one Gervasio used to make his brother think it was why he’d gone after Bella in the first place. After all, the counselor was her father.

Gervasio snarled. “No, you not. Heart in wrong place.”

Cristobal slammed his fist on the table, causing the ring to jump. “¡Fue mi decisión!”

It was his decision. Well, yes. But if Gervasio admitted that, then anything his brother told the police wouldn’t be false.

Gervasio stood. “Head filled with lies!”

Cristobal stood, too, and glowered at his brother. “Solucionar este.”

“¿Cómo?” A solution. What solution? He had all the answers he needed. Gervasio ground his jaw. He knew exactly what Cristobal was going to say.
