Chapter Seven

We found a kiosk that had all kinds of sugary goodness, and Wade got his cotton candy along with a gallon sized pop. I got some water and a corn dog. Jason and Lindsey also got their fill of junk food. The four of us sat at a café table under a large green awning. Wade scarfed down his cotton candy in about a second and started in on his pop.

“You like sugar, dontcha?” I asked.

Wade shrugged. Jason concentrated on a burger, and Lindsey just kinda sat there staring at Wade and holding a funnel cake.

“Will you lay off it already?” Wade scoffed at her.

She shook her head no. “You have powers or something of the sort.”

“People don’t have powers,” Jason said between bites.

“Yeah, what he said,” Wade quipped, actually agreeing with my brother and then sneezing.

“No, there’s something with him,” Lindsey insisted, pointing a finger at Wade.

Wade all of a sudden sat up straight and his mouth dropped open.

“What?” Lindsey asked, looking around.

“Stop, stop, stop,” Wade hissed. “I gotta go.”

“If you’re leaving, so am I,” Jason said, crumpling up his burger wrapper.

“No, you guys stay here,” Wade instructed us as he slowly rose from his chair.

“Nah, let’s all go,” Lindsey chirped, standing up.

Wade gulped and I followed his gaze. Across the way I saw the two dudes from the other night.

“Hey, are those the guys from before?” I asked.

“Guys from before?” Jason asked, looking over at them.

“Listen,” Wade whispered. “I’m going to run now, either stay here or start booking.” And with that Wade turned and started to run.

I went after him. Jason and Lindsey looked at each other and followed in step. I guess the two guys noticed our exit cuz from behind us I heard, “There he is.”

Wade picked up speed. We all ran past the same things as earlier: the guy on stilts, the musicians, families, stands selling junk food. We ran across the levee with the guys close on our heels. They were pushing aside whatever innocent bystander got in their way. We ran down some steps and across an open gathering area that was in front of the aquarium. The aquarium was one of The Levee’s main attractions. We ran past families taking pictures in front of the river, and we darted down some stairs that led to the walkway that ran alongside the water. Wade looked over his shoulder. His eyes grew wide, and he increased his stride. We ran on the paved walkway dodging joggers and babies in strollers.

Wade led the way, followed by Lindsey and me, with Jason holding up the rear. I could hear the feet of the two men pounding the pavement not too far behind us. Wade then darted to the left between two parked cars and climbed the hill that led back up to The Levee. We kept up with Wade. Luckily we had youth on our side and got a good distance ahead of the men who were chasing us. We ran alongside the aquarium. Cement dolphin building decorations swam past us as we neared what looked like a loading dock area.
