TIP

If the weather is cold or sloppy, protect yourself with bad weather gear; there’s no point in slipping on the ice in your patent leather shoes. Carry your nice shoes with you, and find someplace to change before you get up to reception—you don’t want your interviewer to see you changing clothes. Bring a plastic bag with you for your wet things.

Arriving at the Office

Before entering reception, do an outfit, hair, and (for women) makeup check, making sure you look well groomed.

Be polite and friendly (but not obsequious) to the receptionist, for three reasons: It never hurts to be nice, just on principle.

The receptionist may have standing orders to give his/her impressions of you to the interviewer. In a small office or department, the receptionist could actually offer the deciding vote when it comes time to choose a candidate.
