Chapter Fourteen

Ace glanced at Remy’s phone as it rang while they were having dinner with the rest of the cousins and Danton at Castle Sin. His eyebrow twitched as he read the name Mateo on the screen.

“Checking up on you?”

“I’m supposed to report in every second day. I haven’t contacted him since I’ve been on the island.” She picked up the phone. “I’ll have to talk with him.” She rose to answer the call in the foyer.

“Sit down. You’ll talk to him here where we can all hear. Put it on speaker.”

Remy plonked in the chair as he yanked her back down. She turned an annoyed look at him as she swiped her finger over the screen to answer. “Hello, Mateo.”

“Why the fuck haven’t you checked in, Agent Torres?”

“Because I’m fucking busy, that’s why,” she snapped back. If she hadn’t been so annoyed, she’d have been delighted to notice the smile on Ace’s face and the amusement of the others around the table. Silence met her response. Remy huffed and taunted her superior further, knowing he had the propensity to count to twenty when she ruffled his feathers. “Hundred might do the trick this time, Boss.”

“Don’t test me, Torres.”

“I’m glad you phoned, Mateo. Consider this my formal resignation. This mission is my notice period.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” Mateo gruffed.

“I’m done. I quit, Mateo. I’ve had it with the corruption and underhandedness of people in the federal divisions. It’s time to live a normal life. That is what I’m talking about.”

“What brought this on all of a sudden?”

“I would’ve thought you expected it for the past year already,” she said quietly.

He cursed and sighed. “I knew I should’ve forced you to go for counseling when you returned from Trinidad.”

“You tried. I’m sorry to do this over the phone, but I realized when I arrived in Miami that I’m tired of the life I live. I don’t want to do it anymore, Mateo … I can’t.”

“We’ll discuss it once you’re back. You’re making irrational decisions and because of that, I can’t accept your resignation.”

“There’s nothing to discuss. I made up my mind.”

“We will talk about it later, Agent Torres. Now, what is going on there? Do you have everything under control? Is Sinclair under your protection?”

Remy shot a killing look at the six men surrounding her when they burst out laughing. Even Savannah and Rose, Kane’s wife, joined in their mirth.

“What the hell? Don’t tell me you’ve got the damn phone on speaker, Torres? No one except Ace Sinclair was supposed to know about your mission.” Mateo wasn’t pleased to realize everyone had been listening.

“Ace Sinclair here and yes, Mateo, you’ve been on speaker. From this moment on, if you want to know anything, you speak to me. Remy is resigning with immediate effect. In other words, she’s not working a notice period and she’s off the mission.”

“Like hell she is!”

“Like fucking hell I am,” Remy snapped simultaneously with Mateo. She glared at Ace as she poked his chest with a stiff finger.
