CHAPTER SEVEN

OWEN TORE OFF the plastic sheath separating the construction zone from the fully ready suites and flipped on all the lights. Kris had called ahead and made sure it was all-hands-on-deck for the triage. Everyone who wasn’t already in a patient room in the full ER was sent over and nurses and docs were called in from their days off. This kind of community emergency needed every soul present and willing to pitch in.

Kris’s eyes were bright, focused and poised, like the rest of her. She was back in scrubs—something he’d give himself time to appreciate when the crisis was over. Along with figuring out why the hell he’d thought it was a good idea to kiss his boss, a woman who’d barely acquiesced about not having the media present for this mess. Thank God Paul interrupted what would have been an unmitigated disaster. His bad decisions were like wind against the house of cards he’d built his life out of. One strong gust and the whole thing would topple.

“I can operate if I’m needed,” she said.

I need you...

Goddammit. He did, though—or part of him did, anyway, the part that wasn’t diametrically opposed to what it meant to want her, need her—and that concerned him as much as anything else. That his body was acting against its own best interest.

As if to prove a point, he paused and, without overthinking it, pulled her behind a shelving system stocked with bandages, debriding kits and other items they’d likely run out of by the end of the day. He rubbed her arms, the warmth from her thin smile heating his core.

She’d been stubborn and maybe a little bossy and inflexible when he’d met her, but she was the boss, so of course, that made sense. When push came to shove, however, she’d come through.

She hadn’t pried, hadn’t judged. Just listened. Not unlike @ladydoc.

So much for being emotionally untouchable. Selfishly, he wanted to see what it might look like to let go and let someone in. But that meant letting go of some long-held beliefs about the world, his role in it and what his future was allowed to look like—and that would take more than her crooked smile.

God, is this what self-doubt feels like?

He’d been too used to self-flagellation and crushing guilt to recognize anything else that might rear its ugly head at the least opportune time.

He looked around and no one’s eyes were even close to paying attention to them. So he dipped his chin and kissed her, the consequences be damned. Just once, and nothing more than a closed-mouth kiss, but it sent a shock wave through his veins anyway. She had such a visceral effect on him.

His deck of cards wavered. “What was that for?” she asked. The same wave looked like it’d crashed over her, too.

“I just wanted you to know you’re amazing and deserve everything after pulling this off—roses lining your path and a red carpet rolled out, too. This center will save a lot of lives tonight.
