Chapter 8
Jasper was a saint. I don't know what conversation he had with Dracus about the whole thing, but later that evening, he was back in my room.
"We need to talk to him together," he said.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because you're the one who saw it, and you're the one who's pushing for us to do something about it. I think it's only fair. Besides, Dracus has to own up to what he said to you."
I swallowed, feeling guilty. "It's not that I didn't say anything to him, though. I have just as much to own up to."
"Well, then it will be the perfect time to kiss and make up. Seeing that neither of you are going to do anything about it, then it would be good if I was to mediate."
I wanted to find more excuses and more arguments, but Jasper was right. We couldn't afford to be fighting, anyway. Theo was still missing, and time was ticking. The longer we waited, the more dangerous it became for him. And without one of our team members, we were vulnerable, too. There was no time as good as the present. No matter how worried I was that it was going to go wrong.
Yes, a part of me was a coward.
"Okay," I finally said. "But if you start saying things that are offensive again, I'm not doing this. Iâll get Theo myself."
Jasper chuckled and shook his head. "You're very headstrong, Fiona. But sometimes, you need to work as a team. I know you know it's true."
Of course, Jasper was right. I sighed and nodded.
Together, we walked to Dracus's room. Not his office, which was a surprise. Dracus worked until all hours of the night, sometimes. But I guess he needed downtime, too.
Jasper knocked on his door, and when Dracus called for us to come in, he pushed it open.
Dracus sat on his bed, but he stood when he saw me.
He looked terrible. He had dark circles beneath his eyes, and his face looked haggard. His hair was a mess like he had spent a lot of time pushing his hands into it. His mouth was pursed into a thin line. I had never seen him look so bad before, not even after his father had passed away.
"Fiona," he said tightly.
"We are here to talk about what we're going to do next," Jasper said, interrupting before he could say anything else. "But the two of you need to fix things before we can move forward. So, the time is now."
I like that Jasper was being so forward with Dracus. I had never seen the two of them like this. But each of the boys had a unique relationship with each of the others, and I didn't always understand the dynamic. Even though I was a part of the team, and I had lived here for quite some time now, I still felt like a bit of an outsider.
"I'm sorry," I said, my voice thick. I didn't know exactly how to start.
Dracus sighed, and it was as if he was exhausted after carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.
