Chapter 7
We returned to the cabin and made sandwiches for lunch. After being at the Academy for so long and being fed like kings and queens by Mooney, the simple food was almost a treat. It fits in with everything else â the quaint cabin, the beautiful view, the life far away from the Academy, and everything that was happening there.
"Iâm so glad to hear that your childhood wasn't all bad," I said. We sat in front of the fireplace with our sandwiches, the fire having died down last night, and no warmth emitting from it. But it was still cozy.
"I guess it wasn't all bad," Ren said. "But the shadow of what happened to me hung over me all the time. You see how they are with me."
I nodded. "I do see that. But your foster parents⦠It was wonderful of them to take you in."
"I wished they hadn't."
The response was so bitter, and I nearly choked on my sandwich. "What? How can you say that?"
"They took me in and with it they sacrificed all the opportunities they could have had, they sacrificed the clan that would be there for them. It seems ridiculous."
I frowned. "What should they have done, then? Left you to fend for yourself?"
"It's what animals do, Fiona. If the mother dies, the pups are left to fend for themselves. If they can make it in the world, they survive. Usually though, they die."
I shook my head. I couldn't believe what Ren was saying.
"Maybe it's like that in the animal kingdom," I said. "But we are not animals, Ren."
"You may not be, Fiona. But what do you think the rest of us are?"
I frowned, blinking at Ren. The whole time, he had been so warm, smiling, pleasant to be around. I had gotten used to it, forgetting how sullen he could be. How negative.
"I can't believe you're saying that your foster parents were wrong for being kind. Would you rather they let you die? Is that what you want, to be dead?"
Ren was suddenly furious, and I had no idea why. But I was angry, too. How could he say that people who did the right thing were wrong? How could he show me what it was to be family and then chastise the very people who had given him one?
"You don't have an idea who I am, Fiona," Ren snapped.
"Only because you refuse to show anyone who you are!"
"Don't you dare! We all have pasts we want to forget about."
"Except your past isn't your past, is it?" My hands were balled into fists. I leaned forward, my sandwich forgotten, nothing but fighting on my mind. "Your past is your present. You're still living it, every day. You're letting it consume you. Yes, what happened to you was terrible. But it's gone, it can't be changed. If you keep looking back, you're going to miss what's right in front of you."
"And what is right in front of me?" Ren shouted. "A clan that rejects me? Foster
