Chapter 36 - The Cradle Of Chaos

"Can anybody quickly summarize the history of the previous demon king Aldeath Rangatira?" Snorri Hyrst, the elderly history professor, asks the class. The top of his head is bald, but fuzzy white hair forms a wreath open in the front which seems to rest on his temples. While he's on the skinny side and doesn't have a thick mustache, he still has the typical professor appearance. The first time I saw him, I had to look twice to make sure I wasn't seeing things.

"You're asking the impossible, professor!" One boy exclaims in a half-joking tone. The other students begin to laugh, and I look around in surprise.

"Aldeath reigned as the demon king for nearly five centuries." Vitalis leans around Kamii's back, who's sitting on my right side, to whisper to me in a rare moment of clarity. Usually, she's in the clouds and spends more time fixing her makeup - not because of vanity but to hide the fact that she's a slime - than paying attention in class.

It's only my second weekly History and Ritual Day at the academy, but she seems to have paid close attention to me not only during the first time but also when we talk during meals. Otherwise, I don't see how she would know that I seem to lack a lot of common knowledge about the world, and the history of demons in particular. Maou-mama just never saw fit to teach me anything outside of combat as a Crawling Chaos and how to be a ruler, so it's not my fault.

"Indeed, Miss Vitalis." But the professor overhears her and points his chalk in her direction. She flinches, and the makeup on her face crumbles a little. Hastily taking out her powder box, she fixes it with skilled movements. "According to the empire's records, Aldeath first rose to prominence five-hundred and thirteen summers ago."

And even though he asked the students to do the quick summary, he instead begins to do so himself, relating the story of Aldeath's steep rise in power and eventual overthrowing of the hated king that reigned before him.

Even though it's the history of the Dominion, the enemy of mankind, it's being told neutrally and factually; I'm surprised to see that the humans aren't unnecessarily demonizing them. I expected that they would use as much propaganda as possible to influence the impressible youth, but maybe this is all due to the principal's influence.

After all, several demons are attending this class, including Lenoly, Vitalis and me. Tamariki is sitting a few rows behind us, and she's listening with sparkling eyes.

Her red skin and horns are on full display, making her the only demon in this class who doesn't hide it. Well, she would have a hard time due to her incredible height for a girl her alleged age. And as expected, the seats around her are empty, but it doesn't look like she cares at all.
