EIGHTEEN

Slowly, Val loosened her grip on Sophie and pulled back. She could still taste the strawberry sweetness of Sophie’s lips.

This was a stupid mistake. How could she have lost control like that? She couldn’t deny she’d been thinking about kissing Sophie all day. But thinking about it and actually doing it were two different things. And yet, now that she’d had a taste of Sophie, Val wanted more. A lot more.

Sophie gazed at her, green eyes clouded with desire. “Are you going to do what you promised earlier and drag me back into the woods?” The hint of a smile curved her lips, but Val could sense the heat coming off Sophie’s entire body in waves.

“I…Sophie, I’m sorry.” Val twisted her hands. “I shouldn’t have done that.”

“Oh yes, you should.” Sophie reached for Val’s hand. “Look, we can’t deny this attraction. We both know it. The question is, what do we do about it? Or, more accurately, what do you want to do about it? I think I made my feelings pretty clear the last time. I’m still willing to wait, if that’s what you want right now.”

Val squeezed Sophie’s hand before releasing it, and she got to her feet. She sighed as she stretched and massaged her calves. “I’m still not sure I know what to do, Sophie. I guess I need some more time to figure this out. I just don’t want us to rush into anything.”

Sophie stood up and caressed Val’s cheek, her fingers leaving trails of warmth on Val’s skin. “Take all the time you need. I’ll still be here.” She came closer, and her lips brushed against Val’s cheek where her fingers had been a moment earlier. “Shall we go on? The trail basically loops back around from here.”

“Sure.” Val took a deep breath. She could do this. She could overcome the nearly overwhelming urge to take Sophie at her word, drag her off the trail into the forest, and rip her clothes off.

They didn’t talk much on the drive home, and Val was grateful for their shared silence. Instead of pulling up another playlist from her phone, she’d let Sophie select from the many presets she’d saved on her satellite radio service and grinned when Sophie picked a sixties music channel, “just for something different.”

When they arrived, Val considered inviting Sophie in but hesitated, knowing how weak her resolve was at the moment. She was spared the agony of that decision when Sophie gave her a dazzling smile after they got out of the car.

“I’d love to hang out some more, but I really should stop by the lab and set up a few things for tomorrow.” She took both of Val’s hands in hers, squeezed briefly, and then let them go. “Just remember what I said. If and when you’re ready for something more than friendship, I’ll be here.”

Doing her best not to think about Sophie, Val spent her evening catching up with the grant proposal she was working on from the comfort of her home office.
