APRIL 15, 1973: HALDEMAN AND LAWRENCE M. HIGBY, 8:18–8:25 P.M., WHITE HOUSE TELEPHONE

Higby, Haldeman’s principal aide—”Haldeman’s Haldeman,” as he was known—conveys a message from Dean to the President, urging him to cooperate with Henry Petersen.

HIGBY: Hello, Bob.

HALDEMAN: Yeah.

HIGBY: John Dean just called me. He had a message he wanted to relay to the President through you. He would not speak directly to you.

HALDEMAN: All right.

HIGBY: He said: Point one: “I hope you understand that my actions are motivated totally out of loyalty to you and the President.”

HALDEMAN: “You.”

HIGBY: “You.” “And if not”—

HALDEMAN: Wait a minute, wait a minute. “Totally out of loyalty”—

HIGBY: —“to you and the President.”

HALDEMAN: Yes.

HIGBY: —“and, if not clear now, it will become clear.”

“Two”—

HALDEMAN: Wait a minute.

HIGBY: “Ehrlichman requested to meet tonight, but I feel it’s inappropriate at this time.”

HALDEMAN: Okay.

HIGBY: “I am ready and willing to meet with you,”—meaning the President—“at any time to discuss these matters.” . . . “You”—meaning the President—“should take your counsel from Henry Petersen, who I assure you does not want the presidency hurt.” That’s the end of his message. He was calling me from his home, the operator said. . . .

HALDEMAN: How long ago was this? Just now?

HIGBY:: Yes, sir.
