CHAPTER TWELVE

LEXA

I don’t like this, Bob said, clinging onto the railing like his little life depended on it. Lexa ignored him as she drummed her fingernails on a post and looked wistfully into the dense fog.

They had sailed through endless clouds of gray for many hours, and the waters rocked the ship so much, half of the sailors got sick.

Lexa looked up at Ryke, standing by the helm. Every few minutes, he opened his brass spyglass and inspected their surroundings. The encasing thick fog made it of little use, but they could never be too careful.

I have a bad feeling about this. I feel it in my bones, Bob said, his claws snapping.

Lexa sighed. You always have a bad feeling. Besides, there’s no turning back now.

She picked up a sword Ryke had given her and began to sharpen the weapon just so that she had something to do with the nervous energy in her hands. I know what you’re going to say, but, Bob, they’re just rumors.

Hackett stopped eating the scraps and joined Lexa on the deck. Rumors about Neverland, you say? Why yes, I do believe I’ve heard a few.

Bob looked from Lexa to Hackett and scuttled down the side of the ship to stand in front of Lexa’s blade, giving her a steely glare.

Neverland, Neverland, ere winter she’ll never know. Neverland, Neverland, young and fertile waters flow. Come to me in Neverland, come and be free. Bring your worries and labors with thee. Neverland, Neverland, ere winter we’ll never know.

Bob stopped singing while Lexa suppressed a laugh. That was beautiful, I had no idea you had such a lovely voice.

Bob snapped his claws. It’s not supposed to be beautiful. It’s a warning. You know what they say. Those who venture to Neverland do not return.

Hackett ruffled his feathers with a honk. That is true, I have heard that as well.

Lexa dropped the metal with a huff and looked at the seagull hard. And what would you have me do? Forget about my father? She glared at Bob as well. You are his most trusted advisor. Are you advising me to abandon your king?

Bob did not reply, and before he could come up with an argument, Hackett soared into the sky above their heads and let out a warning cry.

We’re approaching land!

Shortly after, Ryke yelled at his men to drop the anchor. “We’ll take the boats from here.”

Lexa jumped to her feet, then pulled her hair back into a ponytail. The sailors marched about, busying themselves with their tasks, some of them more eager to get off the ship than others. There was a violent judder followed by a splash, and the ship lurched to a halt. Ryke scaled the ladder and called out orders to his crew.

Lexa turned to Bob and Hackett. Stay here until we return. When Bob started to argue, she gave him a hard look. You’re safer on the ship. Besides, we shouldn’t be long.

Begrudgingly, Bob plopped down on the wooden floor. Meanwhile, Hackett had returned to the scraps and began to help himself.
