CHAPTER 18

Jules needed a sign from the universe.

The next afternoon during a rare quiet moment at her desk, she looked moodily at her laptop screen. She’d opened Google Docs and started a new page. Now it mocked her.

Just jot down some ideas, she told herself. Something. Anything. But nothing came to mind.

She had to get over this paralysis. Yes, Vivian had done Jules a disservice in trying to help. She’d also been well-intentioned, and there was nothing to be done about it now. Jules could only move forward. She didn’t want the highlight of her career to be interviews with fashion designers for web copy.

Ironically, what had lit the original fire under her ass months ago was wanting to impress Vivian. She’d wanted to prove she had talent beyond keeping to a daily schedule. Then it had become more. Once she’d started, it had felt so good to use that part of her brain again. She’d loved writing in college and had fallen out of practice.

Dammit. Jules flopped back in her chair and growled at the laptop. She could tell herself all she wanted that it was because she was busy. And she was—there never seemed to be enough hours in a day—but she wasn’t even trying. It wasn’t about the hours; it was about the stupid voice in her head telling her that nobody would take her seriously.

Yeah, a sign would be great. A flash from the heavens to tell her that she wasn’t a pretender after all. Her confidence was sucked dry.

Come on. One passive-aggressive email and you lose your courage? How insecure are you?

Right. Yeah. She should listen to that little voice instead and then write something. Anything. It didn’t have to be brilliant. Just words that, if you squinted at them, formed a sequence of some kind.

“Looking for something to do?”

Jules looked up to see Simon approaching her desk. She resisted the impulse to slam her laptop shut as if she’d been doing something wrong. “Uh, yeah, always. I think I’ve finally got the truck company on a regular delivery schedule.”

“Good, good. Changing the subject, I have an invitation for you. Nonobligatory in this case. Maxwell Walker is an absurdly wealthy investment banker who’s started a rock band as a vanity project, and he’s hosting a concert at the Cutting Room. He’s expressed some interest in A&J as a potential investment opportunity.”

What could Jules possibly contribute to that? This better not be a gross ask. She didn’t want to walk out on this job.

Simon must have read her mind because he said quickly, “This isn’t me asking you to wear a low-cut top. If anything, I’d be the one to—” He coughed. “Not that it’s about that.”

Well, well. Simon’s cheeks had gone red.

Jules leaned forward with a grin. “Can I see his picture?”

“You can Google it,” Simon said with dignity.

“Trust me, I will. So when is this concert that’s only about investment opportunities?”

“Starts eight p.m. next Friday. And that’s enough out of you, smartass.”

Jules and Vivian never got together on Fridays.
