Chapter Four

We met my father at Liberty House. He and Linda were waiting out front, all dressed up, and seemed excited we were taking them out. She was in such a good mood she patted my shoulder as we took off.

“Thank you for the peaches. I’m going to make a pie!”

“Glad you like them,” I said. None of us mentioned the baby who lay in my arms, miraculously asleep as Jason drove. She and Dad acted as if he wasn’t there.

“Where are we going?” Dad asked.

“A new restaurant that just opened up in Wahiawa,” Jason said.

I already knew he wanted to check on his new investment, Michel’s—a French restaurant owned and operated by a cute little Frenchman of the same name. He had approached Jason the first week we’d returned to Honolulu. Being a foreigner, the man was worried about getting financing from an American-owned bank on the island. Jason was only too happy to help.

“Wahiawa?” Linda sounded doubtful. Located in the central valley of Oahu, this sleepy, quiet, peaceful town had the funny name of Wahiawa—Hawaiian for ‘Place of Noise’.

It had once been so quiet people said they could hear the sounds of the ocean from both sides of the coast. Now it was surrounded by military bases.

Jason thought Michel was smart to provide French food in such an unusual place. In spite of heavy military presence, there was a serenity to the area. We drove over the only road leading to the town, oohing and aahing as we passed one of the few lakes on the island, Kaukonahua.

When we arrived at the airy restaurant on Wilikina Drive, we were charmed by the place—and by the smell.

“Onion soup,” Linda said, sniffing appreciatively.

Michel came out to greet us. He seemed to like Jason and shook his hand repeatedly.

Being French, he reserved his extra special charm for Linda and she gobbled up the attention.

After greeting us, he gave us hand-printed menus and once we’d ordered he raced off to the kitchen.

“He does all the cooking and table waiting himself,” Jason said. “He told me he works fourteen-hour days and it is nothing to him.”

Linda played with her cutlery. “He has more stamina than your father, Tinder. He comes home and falls asleep the moment he walks through the door.”

I saw my father’s face fall. He was probably exhausted when he came home from work.

“Any news on shipments?” Jason asked, wisely changing the subject.

“As you know, we’ve got more and more servicemen coming into Honolulu every week. Sailors, soldiers…supplies of everything are limited. I’ve been talking to the Matson cargo office in San Francisco, and they’ve just been authorised to send over a shipment next week. We should have it five days after that.”

That had been the company’s motto for its exotic cruises, but with everyday supplies being so low on the islands, this shipment would be essential. My father looked worried.

Three Matson cargo ships had already been bombed, including Jason’s.

“Things have to get better,” Jason said. “I really think they will.
