Chapter 21

Over the North Atlantic

Dekker was relieved to be in the air and on the way to Langley Air Force Base located outside Washington, D.C. The issue of documents for Galdur was a bit of a sticking point but in the end Colonel Michelson relented and issued a temporary visa, good for seven days only. Dekker and Galdur boarded the Boeing C-17 Globemaster and settled in for the six hour flight. Dekker was surprised how full the aircraft was, given Iceland’s remote location. Everyone on board was either connected with the government or one of the military branches; a few were Icelandic nationals traveling to Washington in some official capacity or another. This method of travel was old hat to Dekker who typically went from place to place across the world on military flights. As transports go, this aircraft was very nice with comfortable seats and even a US Navy steward to provide drinks and sandwiches. Galdur, who had never been farther away from Iceland than a fishing boat could go, was quite concerned that the huge aircraft would fall out of the sky.

“How can something so huge, so heavy, stay aloft?” Galdur wondered.

“It’s all about lift and thrust ratios,” Dekker responded in a comforting tone. “Don’t worry, it’s very safe and if you sit by the window you’ll see Iceland as you never have before.”

Galdur had been proven courageous throughout their pursuit through the mountains and in the confrontation in the park, and this new experience was met with the same self-assurance Dekker had come to respect in the old man. Galdur sat by the window and seemed to enjoy the view. A glass of ginger ale and ham sandwich added to his growing calm and after an hour over the open ocean, he slept.

Dekker did not sleep, instead spent the flight making arrangements they would need upon landing. He inquired of the steward if they had a communications center on board. The young man answered in the affirmative and showed him the location behind the mid-cabin galley.

Dekker first attempted to call Marilyn Stamm, Lynch’s administrative assistant. The NCTC receptionist told Dekker she was no longer assigned to the Agency. After much cajoling, pleading a blatant appeal to the receptionist’s sense of feminine propriety, he discovered Marilyn had been transferred to the Department of Commerce. The specific division assignment was not known, but at least he had a place to start.

The Department of Commerce is huge. Trying to find an individual without a mail-stop number or other identifier is almost impossible. This is when Dennis would come in handy, Dekker thought. Because he was on a US Government network he could access a complete DoC roster and finally found the listing he sought: Stamm, M. There was an extension number next to her name as well as a government email address. Dekker hesitated before contacting Marilyn, unsure whether Abaddon’s people had the reach to tap phones and monitor specific email accounts. In the end he decided it did not matter and made the telephone call.
