Not so long ago, you called me. You asked if I was doing well, and after a short conversation about my younger brother and the weather, platitudes like that, you told me that you needed to earn some money for yourself, for daily life and for going out—I didn’t know what you meant by that, going out. You let several seconds pass, took a breath, and continued: “That’s why I need some work. And I thought I could do the cleaning for you. I’ll come when you’re not at home, of course—I won’t disturb you. I clean the place, you leave the money on the table, I go.”

I forced myself to reply, despite my surprise. What could I say? I tried, in any case; I told you that it just wasn’t possible. I added that I could give you a bit of money if you needed it, but you went on, No, no, I’m not asking for alms. What I need is work. Think about it.
