Chapter Thirteen

Levi flagged a porter to carry their bags once they cleared customs. Her grandfather had already called to say he and her grandmother were there.

“Is that everything?” She waved Yasmine off when she went to take something from her. “Just carry my briefcase and we’ll be set.”

Levi’s grandparents were easy to spot since Madelena was a carbon copy of Jane, her mother. “That has to be them.”

“That’s them, and if I know Grampie, he’s double-parked somewhere.” She made introductions and the Hassani sisters were treated to the same kind of greeting Levi got.

“Levi, go with your grandfather and get the cars,” her grandmother said. “I refused to get towed again or get into an argument with official-looking people, so he’s parked like a normal person.”

“Yes, ma’am. Find a place to sit and I’ll call when we’re outside.” Levi glanced back as they started to walk away, but Yasmine only smiled at her. She doubted Yasmine knew what was in store for her, since she’d bet heavily that her mother had already called Jane and filled her in.

“Don’t worry so much. She won’t embarrass you, and she’s lovely.” Her grandfather put his arm through hers and laughed. “They both are, actually, and I’m looking forward to one of your hunts, bear.”

The nickname had come from her love of the teddy bear they’d gotten her as a toddler, and it had stuck. “I think we might actually get somewhere good this time, Grampie.”

They piled all the luggage in the Land Rover and watched her grandparents drive off, as Levi and the girls followed in her grandmother’s car. Thankfully, the traffic wasn’t horrible and the trip to Chelsea would be quick.

“My grandmother didn’t give you a hard time, did she?”

“Not at all, bear,” Yasmine said and smiled. “She must be your biggest fan.”

“My grandmother is the best. She’s not as blunt as Gran, but she’s good at getting her point across.” She glanced in the rearview mirror and smiled at Zara. “If you’re interested in symbolism, you should ask Granny a few questions. Grampie is a professor, but Granny worked for the government for years. Symbols don’t come up often in that part of her life—she’s more like Yasmine and an expert on codes. But Granny also does some work at the British Museum so she can dabble in the things she’s passionate about, and a lot of that has to do with symbolism.”

“Your family is like a real-life version of some kind of think tank. It’s incredibly intimidating.” Yasmine reached across the middle console and touched her arm. “I think our family will disappoint you when you meet them.”

“Growing up with my family was an exercise in intimidation, but your family produced you and Zara. It doesn’t matter if they teach at Oxford or stay home, they instilled amazing qualities in you.” Levi took her eyes off the road for a minute and gazed at Yasmine. Her beauty really did have a way of making you stare.

“My sister’s right,” Zara said, breaking the spell.
