Chapter 15

Nessa

I looked up when I heard the motorcycles, surprised to see the pack arrive on three of them.

So it had come to this. Nick would fight Reg. Had he chosen this location on purpose?

My heart was in my throat when I watched them get off their bikes at that mall, and I did my best to stay hidden. If Reg saw me, he would tear me apart right here, if only to hurt Nick even more.

But staying hidden meant that I couldn’t quite see what was going on, and that was pure torture.

Soon, the sounds of the fight were unmistakable. The yipping, growling and screams didn’t tell me what was happening, and my heart beat fast, worrying about Nick.

It seemed to take forever, but in reality, the fight was over quickly. Silence fell, and then I heard Reg scream, and then a wolf was crying out in pain.

I hope it meant that Nick had won.

Even so, I didn’t dare move out from my hiding place. That pack had turned against me. Eventually, I heard the motorcycles start up and move out, and I hid some more, trying to calm my heart enough to think.

Nick had not come or called for me.

My heart sank.

He must have lost.

It took me a while to gather all my courage to go and look for him. I shifted and put on my clothes, then pulled my backpack from the panniers, added a few bottles of water and my blanket.

I needed to find Nick. I needed to know if he was still alive.

It wasn’t likely, not with Reg being in command. Normally, the loser of such a fight was allowed to leave in shame. But Reg wanted both of us dead.

With a heavy heart, I stepped out of that little thicket of trees and bushes that had been my hiding place.

The gate in the fence was pulled close, but I could see that the chain with its lock was hanging loose. I hurried there, stepped through the gate and closed it completely, draping the chain so that the broken lock wasn’t immediately obvious.

And then I looked for the spot where the fight had taken place. Soon, I found a circle scuffed into the dirt. Inside it, the ground had been torn up as if from many claws, and there was a lot of blood. After that I only had to follow the trail of blood into that abandoned office building and through a hallway into a room at the far back.

In true wolf-fashion, Nick had crawled underneath the desk, curling up in the corner of the walls.

I could hear his rapid, shallow breathing, and my first thought was relief that he was still alive. And then I realized he was barely hanging on. So I crawled under the desk, as well, muttering a gentle greeting just in case he was still somewhat aware and then I took a good look.

His black fur was matted with drying blood, his eyes were closed, his ears slack.

“Nick.”

He didn’t react, and while I knew that he would heal faster in wolf shape I needed to know how bad it was.
